Memoirs of a GeishaEn (縁) is the idea of a karmic bond that endures for a lifetime. When Mameha tells Sayuri that she and Nobu share an en and cannot escape it, Sayuri recognizes the truth of her words: Nobu has made a deeper impression on her than most people, and she has long sensed that he will remain somewhere in the landscape of her life, even though she cannot know whether he is her ultimate destiny.
Meaning and Image
Sayuri explains en through the image of people as pieces of clay that retain the fingerprints of everyone who has touched them. The metaphor makes connection material and cumulative: a person’s life bears the marks of others, and some impressions reach deeper than most. En names the enduring force of such a mark, not a guarantee of a particular outcome.
Sayuri and Nobu
Mameha applies the idea directly to Sayuri and Nobu, declaring that their bond cannot be escaped. Sayuri’s agreement rests on her own longstanding intuition, rather than on certainty about their future. She can imagine Nobu continuing to matter throughout her life without knowing whether he will ultimately be her destiny.
Uncertainty and Consequence
The exchange turns from recognition of the bond toward the pain of what may lie ahead. Sayuri wonders whether her hardest lesson is still in front of her and whether she must put away her hopes where no one, not even herself, can see them. Mameha does not resolve that uncertainty; she tells Sayuri to return to the okiya, prepare for the evening, and use work to get over her disappointment. En thus holds connection and uncertainty together: a bond may persist without offering escape from disappointment or control over what comes next.
